Many students ask what the weather in Grenada is like, so we’ve decided to write a blog about it. We take an in-depth look at how to predict the tides and weather in Grenada. It’s easy to master meteorology with the RYA.
General Weather in Grenada
Quite simply… gorgeous! The weather in Grenada is very conducive to year round sailing. Average air temperatures range from 24 °C-30 °C (75 °F-85 °F), with a cooling breeze. The lowest temperatures are between November and February when the trade winds occur. Altitude has a direct bearing on temperature, and the mountainous areas are a lot cooler (obviously this doesn’t effect you so much on a boat!)
The dry season is between January-May, and the rainy season starts from June and runs through to December. The rainy season does not mean there is solid rain; tropical showers are normally fairly short, and the blissful sunshine soon reappears to dry you off.
Grenada is classed as below the Caribbean hurricane belt. Many cruisers and skippers bring their yachts to Grenada during this season, which runs from June 1st-December 1st. Insurance companies stipulate that yachts must be below a certain latitude during this time of year, and Grenada is the first island in this area.
We must always be aware that there is still the possibility of a hurricane, as seen with Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Included below are resources for hurricane prediction and warnings:
Travel and sailing insurance is always worth having for peace of mind. We highly recommend TopSail Insurance for single or annual multi-trip coverage.
Tides in Grenada
Grenada is classed as tidal and your certificate will be marked accordingly. The tidal range in Grenada is marginal compared to places like the UK; however, they are still very important to refer to when passage planning. We use the following tide prediction resources:
