You might be wondering what you should wear on board if you have never been on a Caribbean sailing vacation before. We get asked this question by many new students enrolling on a learn to sail course in Grenada.
Quick Dry & Comfortable Yachting Clothing
Here’s some tips for all the family on how to stay cool, comfortable and look stylish on your next Caribbean sailing vacation!
Sun Protection
Grenada is just 12 degrees north of the equator with temperatures averaging 30 degrees celsius during the day. Whilst sailing, UV rays reflect off of the water which means you really need to protect your skin and eyes from sun damage and heat.
One of the most important pieces of yachting clothing is a hat. Baseball caps and wide-brimmed hats are good as they shade your face. Another great design is the helmsman style hat which has additional cover to stop the back of your neck and ears getting burned. Make sure your hat has a retainer so it doesn’t blow away!
Sunglasses will protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. Polarised sunglasses in a wrap-around style are favoured by many water users. Some brands have floating versions just in case you drop them!
Modern fabric design means that UV protective clothing is now widely available and affordable. This is great for little sailors, as well as adults spending a lot of time in the sun. From tops and t-shirts to full length trousers, leggings and shorts – you can protect your skin head to toe.
Comfort & Function
The Caribbean is very laid-back, and the islands in Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines reflect this. During the daytime, t-shirts and shorts are the popular casual style. There is the option for smart-casual evening attire if you feel inclined.
We recommend students and guests to bring at least two sets of swimwear with them. After a fun day of sailing you will be ready to jump straight into the clear turquoise sea to cool down! Sun protective rash vests/suits are a good idea for snorkelling – they will also protect you from any stray jellyfish.
Yachting clothing made from quick dry material is a godsend when sailing. Be prepared to get a little wet from an errant wave splashing you, or a short rain squall passing over. Clothing that dries fast means that you can pack less and have more space in your cabin!
Students and guests can choose to go barefoot or wear non-skid, non-marking shoes on board. Make your footwear choice based on how comfortable you feel. On shore, sandals, flip-flops or sneakers are favoured.
